Jameson Resurection

Jameson Resurection

well, well. after many years of crappy gameplay ( and a conversation with 1 of my friends from my home town) i got to thinking of frontier ( or more correctly, first encoutners).

i remembered with great clarity (i'll come to what was forgotten in a minute) the feeling of waking up for college with sore eyes after playing till the early hours of the morning, smoking too many herbs and generally getting commander Jameson to be a very rich space dweller. this was trmendous gaming for the era.

so filled with nostalgic glee, i set about searching the net for what i could fing regarding my old vice, and, imagine my excitement to find that it is now shareware and easy to download the requisit files.

so, armed with mouse driver, dos (setup up an otherwise unused celeron 400 with windows98se) and memories of having milions of credits and a criminal record the size of ....... erm, well longer than that.............. but shoter than my arm, i set out to drop to dos( now this is where my memory got just a little jaded).

i had forgotten how bloody difficult it was to tweek this OS. how much of a nightmare configuring DOS for memory management and getting all dirvers loaded into memory can be.

so, 2 hours later and i still cant get sound. don't know why it popped into my head, but from somewhere came the idea "emm386----- what a pile of ..... that used to be!" and after a lil bit of searching the web, i found my sound card doesnt like that memory manager and wont work with dos games. JOY.

another hour spent and soemhow (pls dont ask) sound works, mouse works in dos AND i can get the game to run, whooooooooooooohoooooooooo.

boy am i happy i got that sound card working, i had forgotten how amazing that in-game music was (ok , a little irony, but i have wasted 3 hours already), and im ready to play.

start off with my little ship, a grand in the bank, 1t of fuel and absolutely no memories whatsoever of how i go about a new career. i can remember verywell selling hundreds of tonnes of narcotics thru the bulletin boards and making wonderful profits, selling everything, getting fast small ship, and paying respects to some1 on behalf of some1 else in the bulletins for more profit and ratings. BUT now feel completely out of my depth, a very small fish in a universe sized pond. wondering what to buy in gateway, and to take it where to sell it.

i used to love this game, but i think i may have grown to love it as my bank balance and my ratings soared.

to be hhonest, there's no real point of this post except to say that it feels like i've found an old friend after many years and am stuck for conversation. i'm gonna keep going with my new career though as its still got my attention after 7years break, and im really bored with GTA-VC already.

i just wanted everyone to think about that first time they played this wonderful game. remember what its like to not have an Elite rating, not have 10m credits in the bank, not be able to hyperjump further than than the local shops and not even be able to buy 3t of robots without selling of bits of your ship.

anyway, enough typing and back to my game, i reckon im gonna get 7t of fuel and try make my way to Sol, remember (vaugely anyway) that there's some good trading round there and perfect starting ground for a old-school pirate turned complete noobie like me.

good luck with your own games guys and wish me luck also, can't quite remember if i'll need it, but think i probably will.
